There’s an update regarding one of the most anticipated luxury hotel openings in the United States, as an official opening date has finally been set… but I’m suspicious.

Aman Hotel New York City opening summer 2022

Several years back it was announced that uber-luxury hotel group Aman will be opening a property in New York City, in the iconic Crown Building, on 57th and 5th.

Initially Aman New York was supposed to open in 2020, but then the pandemic happened. Since early 2020, the hotel’s status was simply listed as “opening soon.” Then in early 2022, it was stated that the hotel would open in May 2022, but no specific date was given.

Now there’s a further update, per an email sent out by Aman. It’s stated that Aman New York will be opening as of August 2, 2022, and the hotel will start accepting reservations as of July 25, 2022.

In many ways I understand the delay, because for most of the past two years there hasn’t been much demand for New York City hotel rooms. New York certainly wasn’t Miami during the pandemic.

However, I can’t help but find the more recent delays to be a bit confusing:

  • Most recently it was stated that the Aman would open in May, but that’s not happening anymore, even though demand for New York City hotels has increased significantly
  • If Aman New York plans to open August 2, I find it very suspicious that the hotel only plans to start accepting reservations a week before opening; that doesn’t give me much confidence in the timeline sticking
  • In general I can’t help but feel like many of Aman’s projects are stalled; look at Amanvari in Los Cabos, as in 2018 it was reported that the hotel was supposed to open in 2020, while now it’s stated that the hotel will open in 2024, even though it has been under construction for years

What we should expect from Aman New York

Aman New York will feature 83 suites (on floors 7-12), which will be a minimum of 750 square feet (that’s huge, especially by New York City standards). Each room will feature a fireplace, which is a cool feature you don’t find in many hotels.

The property was designed by architect Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston, and it’s said that the property will pay a “nod to the brand’s Asian roots.”

In addition to the hotel, Aman New York will feature 22 private residences (on floors 13-25), ranging from one to six bedrooms. Many will even feature outdoor terraces and some will feature private pools (one of which is pictured below). One residence will be a five story penthouse — I’m sure that’ll be super affordable. 😉 These will be the first urban Aman branded residences.

Facilities at the hotel will include an Italian restaurant (Arva), a Japanese restaurant (Nama), a wine library, a jazz club, a garden terrace, and a 25,000 square foot spa.

This will be the third Aman property in the US (after Amangiri in Utah and Amangani in Wyoming), and it will only be the second city Aman in the world, after Aman Tokyo.

What will Aman New York rates be like?

The hotel is allegedly only a few months from opening, though the hotel doesn’t plan on accepting reservations until a week prior to opening. I can’t help but wonder how much this property is aiming for in terms of pricing, as I would imagine this will be New York City’s most expensive hotel.

Not only does the hotel not have many rooms, but each room is also massive by New York City standards, essentially the size of a suite.

I’d have to imagine that rates will start at well over $1,000 per night, and if I had to guess, I’d say that base rooms will start more around $2,000 per night. I certainly could be wrong, but I can’t see it being much cheaper, and then again, I also can’t see it being much more expensive.

Admittedly luxury hotel pricing right now is the highest it has ever been, at least in leisure destinations that are open. The current situation doesn’t seem sustainable for many hotels, so only time will tell how this evolves.

I’d love to hear some guesses from others on this, just for fun.

This looks spectacular, but…

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Aman New York looks incredible, but to me city hotels will never be the essence of Aman. I’m curious to see to what extent Aman New York can deliver on the Aman experience.

The only other city Aman property is in Tokyo, and suffice it to say that service standards in general are different in Tokyo than New York.

Aman used to open properties in unique locations where no other hotel brands would ever dare. That has changed, as the brand has essentially sold out, with upcoming properties in Bangkok, Los Cabos, Miami, and Niseko. The only unique properties in the pipeline are in… Saudi Arabia.

Bottom line

It’s now claimed that Aman New York will be opening on August 2, 2022. While this is the first time we have an exact opening date, I’m a bit suspicious based on the hotel only planning on opening reservations as of July 25. That wouldn’t be a normal practice if the hotel actually planned to open then.

It’ll be the third Aman property in the United States, and the second city Aman property in the world. The hotel looks spectacular, and I’m sure the dining venues and spa will be incredible.

What do you make of the opening of Aman New York, and what are you expecting rates to be like?
